BACKGROUND

The Stone Jar Tempranillo pays tribute to Stephen and Prue’s grandson Bosco Nicolas Henschke, second child of Johann and Angela, who was born in Spain with a congenital heart defect and passed away in 2019 at four weeks of age. He lives on in the Henschke family’s love and memories. The tempranillo grape is native to northern Spain, where Bosco’s maternal family have a long history of making wine from this variety. The tempranillo was planted from 2000 onwards on the Henschke Eden Valley Vineyard, on rocky soils at the source of the North Para River. The Stone Jar name gives recognition to the German Silesian families and their rich and wonderfully varied traditions, which have been carried on for generations. Stephen’s grandfather Paul Alfred sold his wine to local customers in stone jars, which in the Barossa were known as ‘krugs’.

VINTAGE

The winter of 2021 brought good rainfall to refill soil profiles and the cool, slow start to the growing season resulted in budburst occurring two weeks later than average. An extreme hail event on 28 October decimated the young growth across our vineyards in Keyneton and significant crop potential was lost. Late flowering (late November/early December) avoided the cold and windy conditions, resulting in good fruit set, albeit smaller yields. A burst of summer heat without extremes supported berry development and balanced canopy growth. Welcome rain in late January kicked off veraison and ripening, providing a mild and dry finish to summer. 2022 was a late vintage with harvest dates 1-2 weeks later than the historical average. The resulting wines have great elegance with excellent aromatic and flavour intensity, bright acidity and wonderful ageing potential.

"It is vibrant purple in colour, with red fruits, currants, dry herbs, a touch of the tomato bush, milk chocolate and roast meats. Good focus here, with very fine, silky tannins. Seamless with impressive length, this is a superb local version of this great Spanish grape. Enjoy now and over the next five to six years."

Deep ruby core into a rich purple rim. Blood plum, bitumen, and dark spices leap from the glass. Palate is deep and dark with a brooding dark loam and spice intensity.
