2022 Roeslein

Eden Valley

Barbera

Deep crimson with violet hues. Fragrant aromas of wild red berries, cherry, plum, blueberry and blackberry are intertwined with notes of rosehip, crushed petals and flowering herbs. A fresh and lively palate of raspberry, satsuma plum and violet, with hints of milk chocolate and dark red fruits, is balanced by bright acidity and crisp tannins for a long, elegant finish.

BACKGROUND

The Henschke barbera vines were planted on rocky loam soils adjacent to the nebbiolo in 2002, on a north-facing slope at the source of the North Para River in Eden Valley. The Roeslein (little rose) name is a tribute to the early Roesler (occupational name for rose grower) family property, now the Henschke Eden Valley Vineyard. This small parcel of low-yielding barbera was hand selected and vinified in open-top fermenters, resulting in a medium-bodied, vibrant style.

VINTAGE

The winter of 2021 brought good rainfall to refill soil profiles and the cool, slow start to the growing season resulted in budburst occurring two weeks later than average. An extreme hail event on 28 October decimated the young growth across our vineyards in Keyneton and significant crop potential was lost. Late flowering (late November/early December) avoided the cold and windy conditions, resulting in good fruit set, albeit smaller yields. A burst of summer heat without extremes supported berry development and balanced canopy growth. Welcome rain in late January kicked off veraison and ripening, providing a mild and dry finish to summer. 2022 was a late vintage with harvest dates 1-2 weeks later than the historical average. The resulting wines have great elegance with excellent aromatic and flavour intensity, bright acidity and wonderful ageing potential.

"Barbera can be a tricky variety to get right, but in this excellent season it’s absolutely humming. A quite beautiful wine source from Henschke’s Eden Valley vineyard. Displays that mix of dried herbs and bright savoury fruit characters with a lovely red fruit influence. The palate is seamlessly structured with oak underplayed but evident. The chalky tannins gather the flavours to release through to a very long finish. Excellent example...

“From Eden Valley fruit, this is a superb example of local Barbera. From organic and biodynamic fruit, the vines are twenty years old, while the wine spent 10 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads. Has all the cherries, plums and florals you’d expect, with vibrant acidity. Crimson purple in colour, it is exuberant in style with length. Raspberries, plums and spices as well. This will give pleasure any time from...

"Sour cherry, dried herbs, fruit pastilles with lifted cranberry notes and fine silky textures. Generous and slurpy with vibrant dark cherry, plum with fine chalky tannins and marked acidity."
